Americans consume insane amounts of coffee every day and almost all of our
coffee supply comes from millions of farmers around the world. Most of
these farmers are unable to properly feed their families because they are not receiving
a fair profit from the coffee we purchase from them.
So, how do you know where and how to find fair
trade coffee? Whenever you see this logo, you can be sure that the product is fair trade certified:
Fair trade coffee can be found in many stores, BUT
you usually have to ask for it. Often times it is not displayed on shelves, but
storeowners will get it for you upon request. Places like Starbucks have it as well, but you have to ask for it special. I encourage you to buy fair
trade coffee, it is rewarding because you know you are supporting people around
the planet and giving them what they deserve for their hard work.
I am drinking coffee right now, and it's definitely not my first cup today. I have hear the term fair trade coffee before but I was unaware of exactly what it meant. Thank you so much for sharing and I will try to be more conscious of the coffee I buy. Do you know how much more expensive it is on average?
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, when I hear fair trade i think "hipster tool". I acknowledge that this is a bit unfair by me considering I didn't know what fair trade meant necessarily, and I'm sure more people drink fair trade coffee then hipsters. But after reading through your post I might have to re-evaluate what I generalize fair trade as.
